HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Medicalization, Anorexia Nervosa
Document Summary
Mental illness or mental disorder: mental disorder is a specific category/diagnosed, mental illness is used in a less specific way. Patient, survivor, consumer, client, person: patient is a medical term, in medical system, survivor/consumer people who don"t want to be associated. Criticisms of dsm: lack of hard science. Formed on a committee basis (what should count, what shouldn"t) Based on oral interview: ignores context of person being diagnosed. Based on symptoms from a list, does not consider their situations. Certain symptoms in the dsm might diagnose a person with having depression, but they might be working long hours and having a normal response to this: focus on symptoms rather than experience. Ptsd was not recognized as a mental illness until the 20th century. Homosexuality was removed from the list: reinforces a hegemonic social order through regulating deviance, reliability is not the same as validity (a broken scale is always ten pounds off )
