HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sexual Sadism Disorder, Transvestic Fetishism, Sexual Fetishism
Document Summary
Dsm-5 stresses most people with unusual sexual interests do not have disorders. Those who feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society"s disapproval. Hard to separate our distress from our environment; distressed independently from society. Sexual desire or behaviour that involves another person"s psychological distress or injury, or desire for sex involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent. Excuses criminal activities such as paedophilia and/or rape as a mental disorder, shifts the onus on mental disorder. Examples: exhibitionistic disorder, fetishistic disorder, frotteuristic disorder, paedophilic disorder, sexual masochism disorder, sexual sadism disorder, transvestic disorder, and voyeuristic disorder. Dsm attempts to tread water carefully, lots to be concerned about. Strong desire to be treated as gender different to how society treats that person, or to be rid of one"s sex characteristics, or strong conviction that one has feelings typical of a different gender. Dsm-5 stresses that gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder.
