Document Summary
Illness is used as a overarching term that includes various disorders (i. e. ocd, schizophrenia) other use illness and disorder interchangeably. Discusses prevalence of each disorder in general population. Lacks of hard science; disorders are formed on a comity basis. Does not take into consideration of the person"s day to day life. Can pressure alone change what counts as disease. Ptsd was not recognized as a mental disorder until 1980. Homosexuality was removed as a result of political protest. Reinforces a hegemonic social order through regulating deviance. Reliability is not the same as validity (a broken scale will always be off ) We have no way to figure out whether one is mentally healthy or unhealthy. Shift of focus to symptoms rather than etiology (case) Controversial: autism spectrum, bereavement clause, expanded adhd, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, binge-eating disorder, no internet addiction, etc. Significant and involuntary deviations from what is usually considered normal behaviour in particular group or society.
