In contrast to others, this film captured public imagination. The film was seen as something that showed the mentally ill in hospitals as people who are simple deviants. Kasey worked as an orderly at a mental institution and had done lsd experiments that the government was holding- very much part of the counter culture. Central message: mentally ill are just deviants, re(cid:271)els that refuse to pla(cid:455) (cid:271)(cid:455) so(cid:272)iet(cid:455)"s rules. Influenced public perception of ect, lobotomy, institutions, profession itself. Once able, patients should be released from hospital and maintain partitions through community care: marks a turning point in psychiatric care. The funds that were saved from hospitals being closed down, never went to community care. This increases the amount of homeless mentally ill people.
