One third to half of people report symptoms of mental disorder at some point in time. Living in epidemic because mental illnesses are becoming more popular. People identify more often with mental illness and identified by others mental illness and id. Not more mentally ill but spot it better. Always had mental illness but scared to come forward and did not seek diagnosis. Something about this time that makes people more mentally ill. Phone culture - attention span, satisfaction with life, social media. Dietary changes -food has additives, more alcohol consumption. Take a non medical problem and turn it into a medical problem. E. g. , menopause (normal processes but we reconfigure into a medical problem) Transformed things that use to be normal into a problem that needs treatment. All these explanations do not have to exist independently or dependently. Distress - all people experience this at some point.
