Introducing culture: culture - "collective, common ways of doing, being, and understanding" that are transmitted from one group member to another, culture tends to involve dominance - one set of ideas possesses more power than another. This may impact ideas about mental health and how to treat it. Culture as a social determinant: culture relates to concepts important for mental disorder: emotionally (expressive/restrained), Social determinant: social factors the predispose a person to illness relationships (individualistic/collectivist) Impacts both likelihood of a person feeling/believing a certain way, but also whether their feelings/behaviour are seen as deviant: some theorize less chance of anti-social pd and narcissistic pd in collectivist cultures, where such behaviour is rarer. Living in a culture that promotes narcissism in america: a matter of extent, not strictly only individualistic or collectivist.
