Shapes what we plan to do about it; what we try to achieve and rectify. Can abnormal behaviour be exported : bringing the concept of dsm into a new environment. Many criticize models on mental illness (especially the medical model) because they fail to include culture within their list of variables. A person"s symptoms are partially shaped by their behaviour and experience- themselves shaped by culture. Cultures are related to age, music and many other things. We all occupy multiple cultures at once. Problematically, dsm criteria designed by a very particular subset of the population. Defines if behaviour is considered deviant: hallucinations among first nations communities vs. non-indigenous. Part of daily life, not considered and illness. Solution might be to find a priest not a psychiatrist.
