Somatic therapies- work on the body: psychopharmaceutical drugs, ect- shock treatment, no idea how ect works no science behind it. Other techniques: mindfulness, exercise, cam, peer support. Psychiatrists: see mental illness as fundamentally physical issue: md, can prescribe medications, blood tests, brain scans, ect, often (but not always) favour the medical model. Monday, september 12, 2016: ability to section- hospitalize a person against their well, regulated by canadian psychiatric association. Psychologists: different perspectives of roots cause of mental illness- within the mind, phd, psy. d, trained in clinical/ abnormal psychology, primal utilizes psychotherapy, psychological testing (e. g. personality tests, scales, in blots, etc , regulated by canadian psychological association. Others (social workers, psychiatric nurses, addictions counsellors, life coaches: not all of these people are regulated professional, e. g. counselors . Mental state characterized by profound disturbance in thought. Examples: schizophrenia, md w/ psychotic features, certain types bd, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, etc Schizophrenia society of ontario: schizophrenia is a disease of the brain.
