Resilience
Balance resilience - transitions less painful and perceived as rewarding even as adventures
Underdeveloped resilience - passive, tentative, inexperienced, resemble children, hot house
flower depends on “better half”
Paradoxical resilience - use their resilience in one area of their life but not in another i.e.
public vs. private sectors
Many women are successful hen they have responsibility and feel a sense of pride and
accomplishment
Practiced in either public or private
She may be subjected to abuse at home
Learn what personal strengths are and how they can be applied to areas of their lives
Find whats holding them back in either public or private sectors
Figure out how to bring it out in the other sector
Successful at work but struggles at home, doesn't seem to be able to do anything right at
home, told she needs to ask and demand for things at home, can do so at work but not at
home
Self contained resilience - compromise their resilience with inflexibility, exaggerated positive
aspects of resilience, showing up defences waiting for the next attach, successful by external
standards but neglects her needs
Some people have a life event happen that has lead them to believe they are better off
doing things by themselves or on their own and not trust other people
Became distrustful of others, isolated, defences up, fear being vulnerable,
Externally looks great and in control, jobs are doing to perfect but does so at a great cost,
She neglects her own self in personal areas of her life, feels empty or stranger to
themselves, does network for work but closed off to people generally, doesn’t socialize with
coworkers or friends
Doesn't build close relationships
Friendly and competent, socialize at work
Sibling could have been the preferred child, learnt that her feelings didn't count, managed
to handle difficult situations but not without personal cost, if she wanted positive feedback
from people she would have to earn it from hard work
Needs to explore personal side of herself and meet needs in time of crisis, take resilience
and make it more,
Overwhelming resilience - individual overly challenged, survivor of traumatic childhood by
accepting the blows and threats of others, sacrifice their self esteem and positive self image,
view themselves as the cause of the difficulties, think of themselves with shame, wish they
were never born, feel helpless, withdraw, hopeless, unexpressed feeling present, believe they
are the problem, go back to their origins to realize their overall strength, wisdom and wittiness
Children of abuse, particularly girls and sexual abuse
Not sure how to manage children like that
Self esteem and positive self image is sacrificed
Wish they would just disappear
Feel helpless, hopeless, unexpressed feelings,
Those who survive to this point, they have resilience, they haven’t committed suicide
When resilience to survive is there they wan to take control of the problem
Relieves victim from being victim to being a survivor and nurture into surviving
Stellar resilience - survive and thrive withstood extraordinary circumstances, their
competence, security and self fulfillment belie the chaos, tragedy or hardships they have
