Document Summary
3 classical paradigms from which theories are formed - func, si and conflict. Func: weber - looked at many big societal issues but a missing component was the subjective nature of people. Si - coined in north america, by herbert mead. Func and conf are macro - look at society as a whole. Func the predominant lens used in social research in aging and health. Has since fallen out of fashion but we still use the methods. Researchers don"t have a problem with the methods but the basic tenets. Paradigms are world view and functionalism is a conservative outlook on the world. Society was likened to the body - organs and systems that are interrelated and when the body is healthy it is in a state of equilibrium or homeostasis: works for the good of the whole, not the individuals.
