Political economy within gerontology looks at institutions and relations within society. Pe is a materialist perspective: comes from marx, this means that the social relations are constructed through the mode of production, or capitalism, driven by inequalities and power. Aim of pe is to give a political account of how relations are socially and historically shaped: the disadvantaged and how their relations can be transformed into more equitable relations. Not only one kind of feminist theory or perspective. Feminism encompasses a wide variety of perspectives but there are some core concepts: gender is a social construction, there is a gendered division of labour in society, patriarchy has historically existed. Many feminists do not associate themselves with only one feminism - environmental, epistemological etc. 3 waves of feminism: first wave - mid 1800s - women"s suffrage - getting the vote. Shortly after that women in ns and on got to vote.
