Over two years, researchers improved lighting, put up small fences for gardens, closed alleys, conducted landscape initiatives. Increased trust, increased optimism, hope for the future, neighbourhood identification. Housing estate - british term used to describe massive social housing initiatives of the 50s and 70s to house the impoverished. These estates have become infamous for social problems. Halpern published a study on the estate with about 15000 units. Researches went into the estate and administered surveys. They found that people didn"t trust each other and they were in a bad state. Over the years, the researchers did beautification around the estate, lighting, closing alleys, etc and gave the surveys again. People"s hope for the future went up, trust went up and they became more positive. These initiatives seemed to benefit the mental health of a wide variety of people in the housing estate. Clinical mds found in the dsm dropped as well.
