Lecture 11 in search of good mental health. Rates of mental illnesses have been climbing over last 100 years. Rates of disability owing to mental illness climbing. 50% of major causes of disability are related to mental health. Number of mental disorders has increased 4x since 1950s in the dsm. Mental disorders are not a binary (not category, rather dimensionally) Psy-ences have seen a growth in treatments yet the disorders are not going away. Subjective rating of distress higher than ever before people are feeling worse. This reflects a broader trend in society. We have become disconnected form one another. What counts as health is seen individual, not societal: this is a neoliberalist view individualistic. Narratives around improving mental health focus reflects broader ideological tendencies toward individualization and personal responsibility: mindfulness, exercise, public education, recognize and seek treatment, fi(cid:374)di(cid:374)g (cid:862)(cid:272)ures(cid:863) We"re (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e (cid:373)ore (cid:374)arrowly fo(cid:272)used o(cid:374) the idea of (cid:373)e(cid:374)tal ill(cid:374)ess.
