Most people are not experts do not have first-hand experience. Studies done on peoples consumption of media it seems that media has more profound impact on how any one of us views mental illness than contact with mentally ill people. Media as primary agent of how ideas about mental illness are formed. Most of the time, either people are publicly identifiable as mentally ill are removed from story or their image is primarily negative. Facilitates exclusion or ignorance as if they don"t exist. Negative tropes (stereotypes) misinformed mass public on mental illnesses and treatments. Media/news pressured by industry standards to sell news, conflict of interest therefore not accurately reported commercial enterprise"s goal to make money, not informative or educational. Mental illness seems to lack a concrete nature no physical manifestation that is replicable. Media has powerful role gets to shape what mental illness actually is, defines the limits.
