Changes in society that made people more mental ill. People no longer went to poorhouses or prisons but to a mental institution. This is a period of intense industrialization and urbanization which some people do not agree with. Ex) steady 8 hour hour factory work days instead of freelancing - people did not agree with this. Factors affecting the rise in insanity and mental illness . * dietary changes with urbanization - (gluten & potatoes) made suicide levels go up. Not enough nutrition in early development, weakened immune systems. * alcohol and pub culture rose in popularity. * toxins in products (insecticides, latex, lead etc. ) * medical care improvements (saving those that would have previously died) * infectious agents (syphilis, vaccines affecting brain, polo epidemic) which spread rapidly through cities. Via prostitution, young men who now have a wage instead of freelance cash spend money in the cities on drinking in prostitution.
