HLTHAGE 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Reductionism, Drapetomania, Institutional Racism
Document Summary
Race (is not an actual thing/ material), it is a construct: we use phenotypic features to determine race, has no meaning within whole of an organism. Biological differences within racial groups are greater than those between racial groups: physical features that we often imagine as indicative of race are found across racial groups. No such thing as a pure race, nor are there pure people. Immeasurable- a category assigned by others but race is still meaningful, race is constructed in a relational sense, privileging some & degrading others. Race & mental health: on the whole, western psychology and psychiatry are structured along lines that re ect our society"s privileging of certain notions: individual as self-centred, self-conscious. Mental health understood as individual variable, rather than something tied into broader social surroundings. Individuals who de ne wellbeing in other terms -> collectively, community-focused-> do not necessarily t into this system.
