Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: thought, behaviour, mood, some disorders effect one or multiple areas. Ways of thinking about mental illness: spiritual problem (problematic relationship with god, balance problem (humours, ying yang, somatic problem (psychopharmaceuticals, personal problem (moral failing, problem of consciousness (psychoanalysis, social problem (poverty) Naomi wolf eating disorders due to societal expectations placed on women. Sees mental illness as biological disease where lesions, viruses and genetics cause problems in brain. Disorder arises from internal mental processes that result from interactions with environment. People are conditioned negatively or positively and it is a matter of unlearning these abnormal behaviours. Greater emphasis on society as cause of mental illness specifically in the way society is organized: single vs. married, careers, race. Biopsychosocial: genetic, thoughts and behaviours and economic status and culture. Diathesis stress model: results from predisposed factors (nature) and external factors (nurture) Physical in mental disorder and mental in physical disorder.
