1840"s: spread of temperance, notion that drunkards could be reclaimed (saved) Leaned heavily upon revivalist spirit, public lectures where drunkards talked about their degradation (fall/bottoming out) and redemption (rebirth/rediscovery) Homes of refuge; creation of dry environment. Religious groups set up home where they construct new environments for drinkers begin journey of rebirth. Demonstrate notion that society itself was somewhat central to addiction need to separate individual from normal environment (pubs, bar, etc. ) Medical profession saw problem in less spiritual terms, but still felt that dipsomaniacs had to be separated; yet prisons and traditional asylums not ideal. Disease of mind = open asylums because prisons (punishment) didn"t work. Dipsomaniacs thought of as being different than insane people. Inebriate asylums: large, publicly funded institutions that had the power to con ne people against their will for longer periods of time. Lack of funding public outcry against idea (why spend taxpayer $ to house these people whose problems are self-created?)
