Ideas about addiction are contested history helps explain why some ideas gain traction and others lose out. A concept that becomes invented inventions change over time = same with addiction. Need to avoid stories about progressive triumph of disease narrative; history more complicated and facts situated in time and place. Don"t think of as a story of linear progress/evolution to more certain/perfect truth facts of addiction are tied to particular locales. The invention of addiction may seem outlandish. Often both perspectives exist within same person, institution, laws, etc. Long histories of alcohol production and consumption in most parts of the world. Humans love drugs inescapable part of history. Use in different ways (heal pain, religiously, have a good time etc. ) Evidence of psychoactive substances (change thought, mood, etc. ) for thousands of years. Religious texts in buddhist, jewish, christian and islamic traditions make reference to alcohol; although they might preach moderation or abstinence, discourse focused on drunkenness, not addiction.
