Why this discrepancy: rise of pain medicine as discipline, the fifth vital sign pain is undertreated , wider conception of pain and when to treat it. New pain-related syndromes, like fibromyalgia, etc: rates of fibromyalgia gone up rapidly, some sat it might be a mental disorder rather than physical, assumption that we should be free of discomfort. Freedom from pain as a purchasable good: holloway and haw: because of neoliberalism, we see pain as an individual responsibility, rather than public health problem. Depoliticized: more than 6 million canadians report chronic pain.
