Chronica, relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use. Addiction is compulsive involvement with a particular substance or behaviour. Craving: desire transcends psychological realm, feels almost physical. Compulsion: resisting usr is almost impossible (compulsions is sometimes considered to be part of craving) Possible 5th c = contested: although often discussed authoritatively, core concepts are highly debated. People as free agents w/ ability to make decisions and control behaviours. Lots of people fully or largely conscribe to this idea. Given free rein to citizens to shoot addicts. Making drugs illegal and pouring money into enforcement. Leader of the philippines, duterte, is the modern day embodiment of this approach. Both biological and social sciences question how freely individuals make decisions. Ex. if you have less money you have less choices.
