Our widely most used drug why had caffeine largely resisted the fate of other addictions in terms o social control and medicalization. Why has caffeine"s status as the "harmless addiction" being threatened. Originally grown in ethiopia, first accounts of psychoactive properties from sufits in arab world in 12th c. Mystics were wondering around and tending to goats and one day they started feasting on plant and at night the goats were dancing and having a lot of energy. Altered sufits that something in plant was energized. People started using coffee was a way of energize themselves. Coffee took place of alcohol as a social drug. Worked perfectly for islamic world because prayer schedule etc. , Rise of the caf , primarily a male institution. Hattox: coffee success in islamic world not a given : More restrictive interpretations saw cafes as threat to mosques social role. Murat iv attempted ban due to cafes status as space for political and secular activities.
