Narcotics can be used in non-medical settings. Some drugs may not have always been illegal. Some drugs you can buy over the counter different rules of how people can purchase drugs- Drug schedule the social conditions of the drug. Drugs are not classified simply because of chemical properties or effects. As drugs change, or their scheduling changes (they transcend from one list to another list) The drugs become monstrous once they are made illegal. The social narrative around a drug can change relatively quickly. Interrelationship between the chemical substance, the people who use the drug, and the people who are imagined to use the drug. Comes from coffee plant, cultivated in south asia. Access to it for a very long time was used in all sorts of medication and it was very common. Twice, britain went to war with china to open the chinese borders to sell opium. Other derivatives of the same plant, like morphine, was also very popular.
