HLTHAGE 2L03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Intercultural Competence, Nosology, Biomedicine
Document Summary
Not natural entities e. g. , human beings as natural but nationality is constructed. Battlefield of ideas, everyone participating in battle but some peoples voices are much louder than others. What we end up with is essentially that some ideas won out and some lost out = social construction. Losing ideas do not necessarily disappear and may co-exist simultaneously as fringe notions. With each innovation (change) the construct is slightly different. What we call as normal or ill, is essentially contact dependent (where you are and when) Socially constructed - collective, common ways of doing things, being and understanding that are transmitted from one group member to another. Tends to involve dominance - one set of ideas possesses more power than another. This may impact ideas about mental health and how to treat it. Some cultural ideas are more powerful than others.
