Major depressive disorder: 5+ of the symptoms, at least 1 core feature, depressed mood most of the day. Feeling sad, hopeless, empty: diminished interest or pleasure in all, almost all, activities, present during the same 2-week period and represent a change from previous functioning, feeling/symptoms persist for at least 2-weeks, not just for a day. Other symptoms: significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain, change in appetite, change in appetite - critical in older adults, change in 5% of body weight. Feeling restless, a little clumsy in order to do tasks: fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt. Important to get person"s subjective feeling about this, along with feedback from caregiver and families. Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning: are you having trouble getting out of your house, in ltc - are you disrupting the staff in a certain way.
