Shaped by the distribution of money, power, resources: health conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, global national, local, mostly responsible for health inequities. Test an approach to universal screening for suicide risk at an ed centre suicide screen, referral to service. Indigenous population: well documented mental health disparities. Systematic oppression by the canadian government designed to civilize, assimilate and eliminate their cultures: creation of reserves, residential school system. Intergenerational effects: poverty, unemployment, housing and food security, social exclusion and discrimination. Immigrants underutilize mental health services compared to other canadians: barriers, uptake of existing health information and services, process of immigrant settlement, availability of appropriate services. Individual level: healthcare system is not set up to address social determinants of health, practice level, community level. Individual level: ask about social challenges in sensitive and caring way: a social diagnosis.
