Because of ever changing musical styles, it is very hard to precisely define popular music beyond its literal definition i. e. music that is most popular" (most widely known, produced and consumed). For example, classical orchestral music could be thought of as the popular music amongst eighteenth century european elites. Or swing jazz or southern blues might be thought of as the popular music of the 1930s. However, in the current era, there seems to be a consensus that when talking about popular music, we are talking about a range of contemporary musical styles that have been mass produced, distributed and consumed. Moreover, contemporary music styles that are highly sectional (with short verse chorus repeating patterns), and are made by modern instruments (such as electric guitars, keyboard synthesizers and mixed drum kits).
