HTHSCI 1CC6 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Distal Convoluted Tubule, Proximal Tubule, Renal Corpuscle
Document Summary
Anatomy of the nephron including locations and blood supply. Nephron classes: cortical account for 85% of nephrons. Small portion of nephron loop dips into outer medulla but they are almost entirely in the cortex. Long loops that invade the medulla ascending limbs have thin and thick segments. 3 additional roles: 1) ureters transport urine; 2) bladder stores urine; 3) urethra discharges urine from body. Each nephron consists of two parts: a renal corpuscle, where blood plasma is filtered, and a renal tubule into which the filtered fluid passes. The two components of a renal corpuscle are the glomerulus (capillary network) and the glomerular (bow a "s) capsule, a double-walled epithelial cup that surrounds the glomerular capillaries. Blood plasma is filtered in the glomerular capsule, and then the filtered fluid passes into the renal tubule, which has three main sections: 1) proximal convoluted tubule 2) nephron loop 3) distal convoluted tubule.
