Protein digestion begins in the stomach and is the main type of enzymatic breakdown that occurs -hcl produced by the stomach glands denatures dietary proteins in the preparation for enzymatic digestion. Enzyme that acts on milk protein, converting it to a curdy substance that looks like soured milk. Fat digestion occurs in the small intestines, but gastric and lingual lipases acting in the acidic ph of the stomach also contribute. Alcohol and aspirin pass through easily into the blood. The only stomach function essential to life is secreting intrinsic factor. Required for intestinal absorption of b12 needed to produce mature erythrocytes when absent, pernicious anemia. Although they appear oval, when viewed with a light microscope, they have 3 prongs that bear dense microvilli provides huge surface area.
