Document Summary

Key components are the presence of antigens and antibodies. Antigens - any substances that stimulates an antibody response. The plasma has the opposite antibody of the antigen on the rbc - they react to each other. These components contribute to compatibility when considering blood transfusion. Anti-a body will react w/ a antigen - results in coagulation. Middle column is treated w/ anti-a serum. Third column is treated w/ anti-b serum. Ex. if there is a reaction w/ anti-a, type. Screening: recipient"s serum tested a panel of rbcs. Antibody a will react w/ a antigen. You need to consider the other antibodies that are present. Type o: can be donated to all 4 blood. Type ab: can receive all from 4 blood types types. Rh antigen on rbc surface = rh+ Normally plasma does not contain anti-rh antibodies. Antibodies develop only in rh- blood type and only w/ exposure to the antigen.
