Genetic sex: xx means female, xy means male. Gonadal sex: testes means male, ovaries mean female. Behavioural/psychological sex: how the person identifies; gender identity. If the assigned sex is different than their gender identity, they"re transsexual. The mesonephric kidney does not persist, it"s only importance is early in development. Indifferent gonad: potential ovary (the pink part) or testes (the inside or stroma) Ducts terminates and leaks out of the urogenital sinus. Cloaca: becomes rectum in the back and bladder in the front. The presence of an active y chromosome leads to differentiation of the genital tract after about 6 weeks. The uro part of urogenital development happens concurrently. Depending on which sex chromosomes are present and how they behave we will end up with a number of phenotypes. Start with sex-determining region of y (sry gene), gives you testis determining factor (tdf) which is essential for generating the xy phenotype.
