HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Blood Vessel, Posterior Pituitary, Impaired Glucose Tolerance
Document Summary
Diabetes: diabetes is both a symptom and a disease. The symptom diabetes refers to the large amount of urine produced (polyuria is another name for the symptom) The disease diabetes occurs when there are problems with the body"s regulation of serum glucose levels or antidiuretic hormone (adh) levels both of which are characterized by polyuria. Can have a problem in either the pancreas or pituitary: diabetes is the most common endocrine dysfunction. 4th leading cause of death by disease in north america. The first form is called diabetes mellitus. The second form is called diabetes insipidus: this translates roughly into lots of tasteless urine , caused by a lack of, or lack of responsiveness to, antidiuretic hormone (adh) Adh works to concentrate the urine: keeps you from peeing. In both types blood sugar stays high (hyperglycemia) after meals, sugar is spilled into the urine (glycosuria) and the much urine is produced (polyuria) Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (iddm or type 1)
