HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Coronary Sinus, Heart Valve, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Note: fetal = before birth, postnatal = after birth. Pulmonary system: right side of the heart which takes in blood and then sends it to the lungs for oxygenation and c02 removal. Consists of: atria, ventricles, pulmonary trunk (great vessel) Systemic system: left side of the heart which acts as a delivery system from the lungs into the heart and out the aorta to the body. At the same time it picks up waste products and brings it back to the lungs for removal (right side) The oxygen poor blood travels through the pulmonary system (veins). Remember: this blood has a lower concentration of oxygen, but is not completely deprived of it. Arteries take blood away from the heart, regardless if it is oxygenated or not. Key difference between fetal & postnatal: gas exchange occurs in the lungs in postnatal.
