Document Summary

Cardiovascular system = heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular) The heart is located within the pericardium (protects), which is located within the mediastinum (meaning middle of the chest) It is located anteriorly with the vertebrae posterior and the lungs on either side. The pericardium is a fibrous sac that is fluid filled, allowing up and down movements without friction. The inferior surface of the heart is where the heart fuses with the diaphragm. Located between the sternum (sternal angle and 4 sternebrae) and 4 vertebrae. It holds the heart, ascending aorta, pulmonary trunk and the phrenic nerves (viewed from the left) Cpr works due to the heart being pushed between these two bones to simulate the pumping action. The thymus gland is very large in infancy (size of a lung), however, shrinks with age. Posterior is the descending aorta, esophagus, lymph nodes, vagus nerve (follows the esophagus) and the thoracic duct.
