Week 1 lecture 2: water, acids, bases and bufers. Water is the solvent of life , it performs many funcions: transport, component of chemical reacions, and control of body temperature. Can go weeks without food but will die without water (why water is so important) = relates to metabolism. Body water is almost constant at about 60% of our weight. Diferent issues contain diferent amount of water. Muscle issue contains a lot of water. Adipose issue contains litle water, so obese individuals have less body water, children have more. 40% is split between intersiial luid and the blood. Important for water to be in the compartment where it should be. Issues with paients: water moves where it isn"t supposed to be. The shared electrons of the h-o bond are atracted to the oxygen molecule. Hydrogen are weak forces but are important. Bonds that are constantly breaking and forming in water molecule. This gives the hydrogen atoms a parial posiive charge.
