Thin outer portion consisting of several layers of epithelial cells: where the normal flora is found. Outer most layer; dead cells containing keratin. When unbroken, an effective physical barrier against microbes: serves us well for protection. Thick inner portion; provides strength and flexibility; supports growth of the epidermis. Blood vessels, nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat & oil glands. Follicles and glands can serve as passageways for microorganisms.
