HTHSCI 2HH3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Empiric Therapy, Hearing Loss, Pasteurization
Document Summary
Look at all the infection a pathogen can cause. Group by body systems but also pathogens. How does it manifest look at the infection process. For each type of infection, try and answer the following questions. Infection of the brain we are talking about encephalitis: meningeoencephaltis infection of meninges and of brain at the same time. Can have infections within the brain: abscess. Capillaries limit access to cerebral spinal fluid & brain tissue. Challenge: pharmacotherapy: we need to use drugs that can cross the bbb. Choose an antibiotic that can travel across the bbb: antibiotic must be such that the pathogen is sensitive, and able to cross the bbb. Another level to satisfy to be effective. Skull does not provide a lot of space for inflammation and swelling. This inability to swell makes cns infections life threatening. Absence of normal flora sterile: no microbial antagonism.
