Section 1: chapter 5 - precarious work & the labour market. Transformations of the labour market & boundaryless careers. Areas of canada that depend on natural resources economically still experience high levels of unemployment. In knowledge economy, careers are increasingly fragmented - person works many jobs over course of lifetime. Brings back projects so a business functions based on quality of its skill network and not the skills of individual employees. New types of employment arise as result of new model (eg. false self employment) In the age of flexibility - new employment statuses & periods of employment, leading to challenges in income security. Unemployment & insecurity need to be redefined as the unemployment rate no longer offers a correct measure of the true labour supply. Diverse forms of employment raises issue of distinction bw work & non-work. Security involves sense of well-being or control, or mastery over one"s activities & development, insecurity involves anxiety & uncertainty.
