What do we know: education is positively associated with income, better socioeconomic status leads to better health. What do we still need to know: when should education start, how exactly does education impact health, buffer, protect, mediate, etc, consider the hertzman origins of three health effects, latent effects, pathway effects, cumulative effects. Latent effects: biological, developmental early life experiences that produce health effects later, examples include low birth weight is a predictor of incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in later life. Pathway effects: experiences that set individuals onto paths that influence health, well-being and competence over the life course, examples include children who enter school with delayed vocabulary, lower expectations, poor employment prospects, greater likelihood of illness and stress. 10-23-17: 1970s daycare, 1980s/90s early learning and child care, presently early childhood education and care, language is key! 10-23-17: play-based curriculum, 1 teacher and 1 ece.
