Mucosal tissues differ in the mucins they produce. Mucins that are expressed in human body: huge number of different mucus membranes, all coded by different numbers. Some are secreted, some are membrane bound: muc6: secreted in stomach and si, gallbladder, muc20: membrane bound mucin found in placenta, colon, lungs, prostate. Small intestine: 105 to 108: tremendous number of bacteria in these tissues. Colon: 1012: where you find the most bacteria. 5 ways commensal gut microbiota benefit their human hosts.
