The sixties scoop, residential schools were closing down etc In 1951, a lot of amendments were being made to the indian act. The was written into the indian act to provide certain taxations. Family and child services weren"t technically allowed on reserve because reserves are federal jurisdiction. Now w/ this amendment allowing the prov. jurisdiction on reserve, family and child welfare agencies were now allowed to come and take children off reserve. When residential schools started shutting down, where enrolment was low, they would transition those schools to child welfare instit.
