Adrenal glands located on top of kidney: pyramidal shape and retroperitoneal, very vascular as they release a lot of hormones. Structure of adrenal gland : outside is adrenal cortex. Broken down into zones as we have different hormones released from different zones: inner region is adrenal medulla region where sympathetic nervous system has direct effect on cells here. Cells in adrenal medulla aren"t axons but can release hormones from sympathetic system activation: whole gland is surrounded by a capsule ct holding it together. Histology of adrenal gland outside layer is capsule: cortex made of 3 different zones. Zona glomerulosa most super cial cells arranged in sphere shaped secretes mineralocorticoids, mainly aldosterone. Zona fasciculata largest and in middle secretes glucocorticoids, mainly cortisol cells arranged in columns. Zona reticularis network of branching cell connections small secrete androgens (hormones that stimulate production of male characteristics such as hair production)
