A state of successful performance of mental function: resulting in productive activities, and the ability to cope with adversity. Health conditions characterized by altered thinking, mood or behavior: associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. Most people will show no symptoms: largest is anxiety disorders, second largest is depression disorders. A disorder that influences mood regulation: beyond usual variations between sadness and happiness. Classified as a mood disturbance: falls under the mental disorder category. Often linked with other conditions: e. g. Symptoms: depressed mood, diminished interest in activities. Criteria: 5 or more symptoms, must include 1 or 2, symptoms must be present for 2 weeks. Age: greater risk in younger years. Sex: twice as common in women, yong women age 15-19 most at risk. Increased age: stays depressed for longer. Not well understood: typically when physiological and psychological factors interact. In response to stressful events or chronic stress. Everyone deals with stress differently: there tends to be a threshold.
