Document Summary

Meninges three connective tissue coverings that encircle the spinal cord and brain. Spinal meninx (plural: meninges) surround the spinal cord and are continuous with the cranial meninges: dura mater most superficial, composed of dense, irregular connective tissue. Forms a sac from the level of the foramen magnum in the occipital bone where it is continuous with the dura mater of the brain to the second sacral vertebra. Subdural space between the dura mater and the arachnoid mater, a space that contains interstitial fluid: pia mater innermost meninx, thin transparent connective tissue layer that adheres to the surface of the spinal cord and brain. Within the pia mater are many blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the spinal cord. Subarachnoid space space that contains cerebrospinal fluid that serves as a shock absorber and suspensions system for the spinal cord and brain. Spinal cord roughly cylindrical but is flattened slightly anteriorly and posteriorly.
