Located in mediastinum (cavity: area from sternum to vertebral column & between lungs. Bounded by sternum anteriorly & by the vertebrae posteriorly. Apex directed anteriorly, inferiorly & to the left. Base directed posteriorly, superiorly & to the right. Anterior surface deep to ribs & sternum; mainly right ventricle. Left border (pulmonary border) faces left lung. Heart here is enclosed & held in place. Consists of 2 layers: outer fibrous pericardium; Helps with protection and limiting amount of blood that enters heart (makes sure it doesn"t expand too much: inner serous pericardium; Fused to outer fibrous layer of pericardium. 2 layers separated by the serous cavity, a fluid-filled space. Bumpy ridges on interior surface of chambers of heart. 4 chambers: 2 atria (upper, 2 ventricles (lower) Auricle of right atrium: flabby sac that hangs in front of atrium. Left atrium dominates the posterior side of the heart & the base of the heart.
