KINESIOL 1AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Myocyte, Elastic Fiber, Intestinal Villus
Document Summary
21. 1 functions of the circulatory system: carry blood; transport medium for blood gases, exchange nutrients, waste products, and gases; supports metabolism. Capillaries: smallest blood vessels, no smooth muscle, mostly endothelial cells, site of exchange with tissues. Capillary walls consist of endothelial cells, continuous with endocardium. Basement membrane provides fluidity, helps bind capillary to tissues. Substances move through capillaries by diffusion: lipid-soluble and small water-soluble molecules through plasma membrane, large water-soluble molecules pass through fenestrae (gaps) between endothelial cells. Less permeable to large molecules (muscle, nervous tissue) Endothelial cells have numerous fenestrae, highly permeable. (intestinal villi, ciliary process of eye, glomeruli of kidney) Want to maximize movement into cv system efficiently. Glomeruli make sure we clean out blood of toxins, regulate blood volume, na [ ] by getting stuff out of cv system; first stage is filtering into kidney that can only happen if we have gaps.
