Cardiac part: proximal portion of stomach near the heart. Connection btwn esophagus and stomach is regulated by esophageal sphincter ring of smooth muscle that keeps items in the stomach: when contracted, it prevents items from moving from stomach up to esophagus. Distal end of stomach: pyloric sphincter; regulates stomach emptying. When sphincters contract, they trap food in stomach so they can undergo digestion. Pyloric part:, refers to a general region, refers to distal component. Rugae: folds on interior of stomach increase sa, ability to stretch/flatten out which allows stomach to accept food, increase volume allows stomach expansion. Histology of the stomach gastric pits holes in wall of stomach that extend into thick mucosal layer. Mucosal layer lined with cells that line gastric pits. Blue and red reflect blood vessels, blood, nutrients, o2, metabolic end products exchanged here. Outer visceral peritoneum outer layer of ct that connects stomach to other abdominal organs.
