KINESIOL 1E03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Phase Transition, Emergence, Motor System
Document Summary
Motor program theory doesn"t explain how continuous movements are controlled very well. Relies heavily on the concept that changes in motor performance are non-linear. Go faster: hick"s law (rt and log2n, schema theory to throw further add more force. Small seemingly innocuous changes at one level can create catastrophic changes at another level; non linear, no 1:1 relationship between cause and effect. Water temp changes linearly with heat til it hits boiling/freezing pt when it changes state. Variability in relative phasing increases prior to transition then reduces after transition (diedrich & warren, 1995) Movement pattern breakdown indicates something about stability of movement. As you move faster, stability of movement decreases and movement is broken down. Sd of relative phase is a measure of variability / consistency. Looked at how sd of relative phase changes as function of walking speed. Particular speed at which sd is very stable, occurs btwn 0. 25 and 0. 50 (froude number, way of expressing speed)
