Stressing every other letter 4 letter string vs 5 letter strong abcd vs abcde: first case: same letters being stressed every time vs alternating letters each round. Short term memory has a retention effect beneficial when you"re stressing the same letters again in a short period of time; remembering the stress and good memory has a pos effect. When memory is strong but stress is opposite- detriment b/c you have to disregard what you did before and switch to a new stress. When memory is forgotten lose beneficial and detrimental effect. When memory set is an odd sequence, detrimental effect compared to an even set length. Explains diff btwn even and odd numbered sets. As set lengths get longer you lose enhancement effect of even set length and detrimental effect of odd set length if you extended memory set length both effects would go away. Even-number set lengths facilitate memory; odd-number sets hinder memory.
