Three principles of simple movements: fitt"s law: the logarithmic speed-accuracy tradeoff, schmidt"s law: the linear speed-accuracy tradeoff, the temporal speed-accuracy tradeoff. First two suggest as you speed up you become more errorful, the third suggests as you speed up you become less errorful. For tasks that benefit from speed and accuracy, there is a tradeoff when emphasizing one vs the other. Subjects" task was to move as fast as possible by alternating tapping two metal targets. Fitts also suggested 3 stages of learning (autonomous ) Two key things: size of target (w = width of target) and distance between them (a = amp, d = dist) A = amplitude between targets / distance between them. Based on information theory, idea that we transmit info in terms of binary digits (0, 1) Low id: target distance is small, width is large: more tolerance for error, takes less time to get there.
